Dawn: Oh, well a zoo is a general term used to describe a group of varying species of animals in the same place. Like at a market, or theater, or public venue. At least that's how use of the term started.
Vernon: Yeah, it's usually used reserved to describe more...noisy, busy scenes. So like, y'all wouldn't necessarily refer to a library filled with a few different species of mammals as a 'zoo', but y'all would refer to a stadium full o' excited mammals of all stripes as one. Or, o'course, a city...like Zootopia. *Chuckles*
Dawn: I'm not sure when it expanded outward to cover groups of non-sentient mammals, or the facilities to house them...presumably once Animal Zoos started to become a thing altogether. Granted I don't think most of those sort of facilities use the term 'zoo' in their branding much these days. They tend to lean toward a more specific phrasing. Like an Aviary for a bird zoo, a reptile house for a reptile zoo, and of course an aquarium for fish.
Vernon: I think they still refer to them ape zoos as zoos don't they?
Dawn: Some...I think they call them "primate zoos", although the one we took the lambs too was called a "Primate House"...so I couldn't say.
Vernon: Hoo boy, I remember...I think the gorillas traumatized the pups somethin' fierce. The way those things were carryin' on that day had all the folks there's hackles up. Hard to believe them things are actually mammals too...
Dawn: I know...can you imagine what it would be like had they evolved with the rest of us? I shudder to think about it...
