Ask the BellHunters

Hello, I'm Dawn Hunter-Bellwether...er, formerly Dawn Bellwether if you didn't recognize the added surname. And before you ask, yes 'that' Dawn Bellwether. Ex-Assistant Mayor, Ex-Mayor, Ex-Criminal Mastermind (Reformed thank you very much), City Savior, Controversial Author, and Predator/Prey relationship advocate. I'm also, as you probably guess by the hyphenated last name, married, and happily so to my mate Vernon Hunter, a gray wolf. I'm also a mother to three wonderful pups, something I never thought I'd ever have the chance to be! But, lamb sakes, I've gushed enough about myself here without explaining exactly what this blog is for. You see, after the release of my book “Predator Seeking Prey”, our little family started to get a lot of public attention again, and with it came a lot of question from curious mammals and other pred/prey couples from all over Animalia. My best friend and mate Vernon thought it would be a good idea to deal with these questions directly by opening a sort of blog/forum and taking those questions about our lives directly. Since then, I'd like to say our little blog has been quite successful, with even members of our family and friend circle pitching in and taking a few questions as well. So with all that said., please feel free to Ask Away!

Oh, and also, feel free to check our old location for previous asks until we can get a better archive system in place!

The original Ask Dawn And Vern Tumblr! This blog is a continuation/reboot of the "AskDawnAndVern" tumblr, as I am permanently locked out of the Tumblr at present.

(Blog Author Note: This blog is based on the fanfiction “The Rehabilitation of Dawn Bellwether” as well as it's pseudo-sequel “A Lamb Among Wolves”. If you haven't read them, it'll probably help you better understand what's going on here if you do. I'll link both stories below. Oh Also, I'm open to questions as well. Simply direct “Author” emails to “WastedTime” when composing them. And before I forget, I have a Patreon! Five dollars gets you access to in progress fics, Ask priority, and art previews of both SFW and NSFW art. Of course, even a dollar would help. Seriously, it's how I keep projects like this alive.

Author Ask, Zootopia 2?

WT: Long answer...I dunno, I have a lot to say here and I have to organize my thoughts.

In terms of writing, no, there's no way I'm adapting 2 lore either retroactively or in an AU. I'm far too deep in my carefully crafted little corner of Zootopia to now try to make room for every retcon the official series makes...especially when Z+ already played fast and loose with that lore. Granted, part of that is the fact that Zootopia took nearly a decade to produce a sequel.

From my standpoint as a writer, I feel like Zootopia itself needs some semblance of an outer animal kingdom. Look at something like Beastars, where nearly all life is sapient. Are predators only supposed to eat bugs? Is there nothing in the forests and wilds, no ecosystem save for plants and 'some' fish? What purpose does pest control via night Howler serve farming communities if that's the case? Is it just for bugs? If not, it seems like a war crime waiting to happen. It's nice to have some established... 'limitations' in world crafting, especially if it's something you didn't touch on at all early on and might have to work into the story by hook or by crook. The more you have to retcon large swaths of your world's foundations, the less invested people become. If anything can be changed at any point to facilitate a specific story, what's the point of getting engaged with the world at all? Having controls makes a world feel more real, more grounded, and thus easier to stay invested in.

Reptiles weren't even hinted at in Zootopia, not even a stray background lizard. Now I'm meant to believe they have reptiles right in the Canal District? Where were the seals in Tundra Town? None of them came out of the water at all? And why add any of them now? There were probably a million stories you could tell in the already-established setting as is, even restricting the characters to just Nick and Judy. But the first sequel and we're already adding an entirely different swath in the animal kingdom? Tell a story about hybrids, a story with a pred villian, some other crazy vast conspiracy for Nick and Judy to solve. At the very least if you want reptiles in, have Nick and Judy be forced to venture far out from Zoot to a nearly reptile-exclusive city to better excuse the lack of them in the first film.

But I'm nitpicking a 'children's film' here, so it's all invalid I'm sure. Cause kids are dumb, and don't deserve quality world-building or storytelling...even though Zoot's target audience is now adults or near adults because the sequel took so long to produce. While there were shortcomings in the first film, clearly, a lot of love went into the world-crafting. My art book shows that off in spades. Z+ didn't show the same level of care...and while one of the two guys who are essentially the fathers of the series is back in Z2, I don't see that world crafting improving all that much. Wreck-It Ralph 2 was like the Disney Emoji movie, and that had Byron on both too.

That's not even mentioning the steep decline in the quality of Disney films across the board since 2016. A dark cloud has descended on that studio, one that traded in skill and talent to fill quotas. One that prioritized emphasizing 'the message' over good storytelling. And the company hasn't backed away from that sentiment, it's only doubled down more aggressively each time, all the way up to the shareholders. So I don't expect a solid sequel to somehow crawl its way out from under being 'crafted for a modern audience'.

Lastly, and this is just a me thing, having been in the furry community this long, but Gary is going to (already has) caused a surge in awful fetish material. Between bondage and hypnosis, I'm gonna be blacklisting a lot of new content. That's what happens when you model a snake character after Sir Hiss or Kaa. I imagine it was purely meant as an homage, but man I'm not looking forward to the fallout. My poor eyes will never recover.

I do wonder how mammals and animals that have no comparable method of mobility compared to their four-limbed counterparts would even have evolved to a level of sapience when they can't operate most anything made for four limbers...let alone the lack of thumbs. The best I've seen that handled is Mr. Snake in the bad guys. Still, that was another reason I kept seals, manatees, and dolphins out of the 'technical mammals' pool. Just how 'accessible' can you make a city with that much of a difference not just in sizes, but levels of dexterity without bankrupting it? It's why I made Derrick Colton a 'handicapped' horse in the Vulpes fic. It was largely to explain away a horse photographer who is present at Judy's press conference that has solid traditional horse hooves for hands. As well as other aberrant mammals that may crop up.

Lastly, while I've slowed in terms of getting out my fics, (I intended to complete everything and move on before the sequel dropped.) The Val fic, and the Bellwether Legacy are meant to be the last fics in my series. (Aside from one-off revisits, and the scrapped Finnzelle story.) I didn't want to stay locked into Zootopia fic writing forever. I'd really like to make some of my own stuff. Original work I can maybe do more with than being limited by the restrictions writing a fanwork entails.

At the end of the day, Dawn Bellwether is the lynchpin to my little slice of Zootopia, and I don't own the rights to her. Never will, unless a series of wildly absurd events drop the rights to Zoot in my lap. I can recycle many of the characters around her you've grown to love, and perhaps even a pale reflection of Dawn herself with the right story to go along with her. But...I guess I don't want 'Wrote a killer villain redemption fanfic once' to be the total sum of my work.

God...that was a rant. I did warn about the 'long-version' didn't I? I'm sorry...just a lot to cover. I....overthink things way too much. Still, you go on and try to enjoy Z2. Maybe it'll be great...I've just always been a glass-half-empty kinda guy. Me, I'm probably not gonna see it. Even if Dawn gets a cameo. Lord knows they'll probably go for a 'silence of the lambs' restraints joke if she shows up.

Pregnancy Meme: Ft Dawn and Vern

Blogger be acting up. Silly stuff. Finally, it's taken way too long to actually get to the asks that have been piling up. Between health and other responsibilities, I'm only just now getting above water. That said, this glorious return also comes with a some....disappointing news. This is the last big hurrah for the Ask Blog, at least for a while. I'll be putting the email on ice and working through what I have when I can.

The ask blog is, and was always meant to be the farthest ring out of stuff I work on. A way to promote my fics which...even the fics were taking a backseat to keeping up with the asks. In order to shift what free time I have outside of the fics and art and comms over to my actual art school tutorials, it means I gotta cut something. Sadly I can't do it all...I can barely juggle what I have even with it cut. But the blog doesn't do the job of drawing or promoting the fic series as well as it used to either.

Now...does that mean the blog is forever dead? No, not at all. It will remain up. And even when I run out of the stored up asks I'll drop something cute from time to time...May even expand onward to stuff outside of Zoot. Idk...we shall see...I don't want to just...let the blog wither and die. But eight-ish years is a pretty long lifespan for an ask blog. Perhaps I'll be better at keeping up after art school and do a full jumpstart at that point.

That said, expect some heavy content for the next week or so... I'd love to get it all done. But I've let it build up quite a lot...So it'll probably take two doses to get through it!

Thanks for the longterm love and support guys. It was a fun ride! Perhaps we'll meet again further down the road.

PS. Why would Dawn be upset Paige doesn't look enough like Vernon? Easy answer, Dawn still has misgivings about who she is as a 'Bellwether' and the Bellwether name...Hence having her daughter look more like her than Vernon makes her a little anxious. Something she'd be better at keeping to herself if she wasn't dealing with pregnancy hormones.

PSS. The 7+ month gestation rather than nine and still being considered 'overdue' was because it's a median average estimated first by finding the middle ground between wolf and sheep gestation, and then using that number and the average human gestation to find the middle of that, which turned into 6 1/2 months, which I pushed to 7 to make it well overdue but uncertain.

Stagnation and Sickness

Thanks to my backers for their January Support. I didn't post much, which is part of the reason I suspended February charges. Still, I very much appreciate your support! All of you! And your generosity is never taken for granted...to the point where some of you have taken to reverse fin-domming me. Lol. Love you all.

So the holidays are over, and that's a relief. At first, I thought it had all just caught up with me like getting hit by a freight train. After New Year's I was so exhausted I could barely function. But when it persisted through the month and got in the way of nearly all aspects of my life, I had to reach out to my various doctors and get to the bottom of it. It was hard not to get depressed during that time. I know depression can only add to that sort of thing, but it's hard to stay positive when you can barely stay awake no matter how much you sleep.

When I started...'this', my new pen name, my experiment. I never intended to be this open about my health shit. I've learned from experience it doesn't do well to treat online journals like an actual journal, and people get tired of hearing from the chronically ill. But when you run any kind of business, and you fail to meet deadlines personal or otherwise, you at least need to explain why. That's how being so open about all this stuff slowly leaked into my update posts over time. I felt I owed it to my backers and fans to be transparent as to exactly why certain content got delayed or slowed. Still, I don't love talking about this stuff.

For now, I'll just say that some meds have been changed, and fingers crossed it's a stable combination long term.

Onto workloads. I've got some comms in rotation. I've been testing out this 'stage rotation' kind of system at present, where I have a set workload and cycle from one piece to another between stages. For instance, I'll sketch one piece, then move to the next piece and sketch it. Once I get to the end of the workload I shift back to the first piece and line it, and so on until each piece is completed. Even discounting the health hiccup though, I realize doing things that way sort of creates a period where there really isn't much to show. I've been supplementing that period with showing lots of WIPs...but it doesn't really feel quite the same as having completed pieces to post every few days. I don't know if that's better or worse, to be honest. Backer feedback would help I guess?

Those on the public-only side of things, I've really been slacking. It's a bad habit of mine to let art from the Patreon build up, which only makes me less likely to do all the 'writing descriptions and tags' portion to post it. Even using postybirb takes a while at this point, and I still don't even have the most amazing grasp of tags to begin with. They differ somewhat from site to site, so I'm unsure if I'm maximizing my searchability on most of my pages. So instead of dropping about a month after the patreon and substar releases, I end up dropping the art publically like...two months after. Unless it's a commission that the client wants to be posted publically on completion of course.

I just dropped a new print on my personal merch site, which is pretty nearly done. So if you liked the Amelia pin-up I dropped recently called 'A Festival of Lights', consider picking up a print. I've started adding exclusive deals to my personal merch site, and have been considering a few more deals to throw in to sort of shift shoppers over there. I still have some work to do on the Etsy side of things, basically adding info to all the sheets and descriptions mentioning the uncensored merch store. Clerical work is always the 'boring' part of things, but it needs doing if I want to generate more passive income.

Here's the Amelia Print, a Wasted Merch Store Exclusive!

I'm overdue on asks, and writing. I've still got editing to look over, even if all the editing isn't done on the next chapter. I'm sorry, it's taking forever I know...hell the whole Val story is taking forever. And here I planned to not only have that one done by the time Z2 came out, but two other fics in the Bellhunterverse series. Z2 was meant to mark my exit, as I wasn't planning on incorporating it at all even before I knew it was going to have a degenerate Kaa hypnosis snake in it. I was plotting to be on original stuff by then, but you can only ever plan for what you can reasonably expect. It took surprisingly long for Z2 to drop too, I had so much time...and where did it all go? Ugh. Regardless I don't expect Z2 to be any better than the shorts, so I was preemptively plotting not to utilize any lore from it. Dawn bias aside, I don't really have any faith that Disney in its current state will make a good Zootopia Sequel.

Don't get it twisted, I haven't turned my back on my Zoot stuff, I'm still happy with my work and want to complete my remaining stories. I just had planned for the remaining three to be an ending for my time spent in the universe. A nice, logical end to the BellHunterverse. Granted at this point I may just forgo the Finnzelle story entirely to allow me to wrap things up with 'The Bellwether Legacy" after Vulpes wraps.

Artwork stuff wise I'm still elbow-deep in commission work. I expected to be coloring some of the lined stuff I shared by now, but it can't be helped. All the while my commission/art idea list just keeps expanding. At least I'm keeping track of my ideas now, but still, I need more me's. Preferably healthier versions of me. I've also got art lessons to work on which I haven't even restarted...and 3d modeling, and animation...god, so much to do, and it feels like I've got no time to do it all. As far as I know, I've only got one life, one go around on planet Earth. Even if reincarnation is a thing it doesn't matter, it's not like I retain previous life knowledge. I've already lost enough time to far too much bullshit, and it's time for things to start coming up Milhouse damnit.

Anyway, I think that's about as deep in the weeds as I want to get for now. If I start giving timetables I'm only serving to shoot myself in the foot. Thanks to everyone, followers, long-time fans, and of course, once again, my dear backers for your continued support.
