Dawn: Platipi are yet another mammal that find themselves squarely on that rather slim list of non-sentient mammals. Not only that, but they are critically endangered.
Vernon: So, you can imagine we've never had the pleasure of meetin' one. Have seen one at the aquarium though.
Dawn: As for why they are endangered, well that's due to civilized mammalian encroachment on their natural habitat in Austailia. I mean, most mammalian societies have tried to design their cities and communities so that they blend with the local ecosystem to some degree. This is done both for the comfort of the mammal species living there, as well as to allow the non-sentient wildlife to continue to live relatively undisturbed.
Vernon: But that whole sentiment stops when the wildlife poses a threat to the rest of us.
Dawn: Right, so species like the Platipus have been kind of...pushed aside when it came to land development, out of fear that other mammals and their offspring would get hurt. And while not as threatening as some of the species of carnivorous ostrich, reptile or therapsid, it was still a danger the Austalian government felt needed to be restricted from entering civilian areas, which led to loss of habitat and endangerment.
Vernon: as fer egg layin' mammals, I suppose iffin' you want a take on that, you'd be askin' an echidna.
Dawn: I've never met one personally. I think the last time I got a chance to look over census records for Zootopia, there was exactly one echidna in Zootopia, and a male at that.
Vernon: Still got his information?
Dawn: *Chuckles* Of course not Puppy, why?
Vernon: I was just curious about that other thang I heard about echidnas...
Dawn: You mean...?
Vernon: I mean, four heads...what do you even do with that kinda junk? It's like he got one of them Mewdusa's heads below his beltline.
Dawn: *Giggling*
(WT: I actually forgot if I ever said Platipi were sentient or not, but it feels more appropriate for them not to be. Hey, I called this blog 'soft cannon' for a reason.)
