Ask the BellHunters

Hello, I'm Dawn Hunter-Bellwether...er, formerly Dawn Bellwether if you didn't recognize the added surname. And before you ask, yes 'that' Dawn Bellwether. Ex-Assistant Mayor, Ex-Mayor, Ex-Criminal Mastermind (Reformed thank you very much), City Savior, Controversial Author, and Predator/Prey relationship advocate. I'm also, as you probably guess by the hyphenated last name, married, and happily so to my mate Vernon Hunter, a gray wolf. I'm also a mother to three wonderful pups, something I never thought I'd ever have the chance to be! But, lamb sakes, I've gushed enough about myself here without explaining exactly what this blog is for. You see, after the release of my book “Predator Seeking Prey”, our little family started to get a lot of public attention again, and with it came a lot of question from curious mammals and other pred/prey couples from all over Animalia. My best friend and mate Vernon thought it would be a good idea to deal with these questions directly by opening a sort of blog/forum and taking those questions about our lives directly. Since then, I'd like to say our little blog has been quite successful, with even members of our family and friend circle pitching in and taking a few questions as well. So with all that said., please feel free to Ask Away!

Oh, and also, feel free to check our old location for previous asks until we can get a better archive system in place!

(Blog Author Note: This blog is based on the fanfiction “The Rehabilitation of Dawn Bellwether” as well as it's pseudo-sequel “A Lamb Among Wolves”. If you haven't read them, it'll probably help you better understand what's going on here if you do. I'll link both stories below. Oh Also, I'm open to questions as well. Simply direct “Author” emails to “WastedTime” when composing them. And before I forget, I have a Patreon! Five dollars gets you access to in progress fics, Ask priority, and art previews of both SFW and NSFW art. Of course, even a dollar would help. Seriously, it's how I keep projects like this alive.

Ask Dawn and Vern: Lionheart's Nose Scratches

Vernon: Heck if I know. Ain't like we work fer him.

Dawn: Thank the gods.

Vernon: Still him gettin' roughed up 'er somethin' would probably make the news right?

Dawn: I suppose...at the very least we'd hear about it from Nick or Judy. Hmm...*taps carrot phone searching her browser for a top story involving her former boss.* Hmm, apparently he was assaulted just outside a book signing for his new...audiobook?

Vernon: How do y'all have a book signing fer an audiobook exactly?

Dawn: I guess it was more like a meet and greet. *Continues scrolling* Apaprently a...overenthusiastic fan... Dived bombed him with a trained hawk in an effort to get a lock of mane?

Vernon: That fella has fans? *Chuckles* How many?

Dawn: The article says the venue was pretty dead up until that point. Still this one little mouse managed to make her through security as he was leaving and...um...

Vernon: Wait, a mouse? *The wolf's eyebrows furrow* When was this exactly...

Dawn: Two weekends ago?

Vernon: *Vernon shakes his head* Welll, that explains why Moira was out all last week...*Sighs*

Ask the Foxes; Rainbow of Moprhs

Cameron: I supposed getting a sort of accurate number would depend on whether or not your are separating by species. Arctics and Fennecs are largely categorized as separate species, but still, classify colors using the general morphs, hence how you can separately categorize a white fox morph, and an arctic fox morph even though they are functionally the same. That prospect alone makes in hard to kinda pen down a hard number on all the possible colors you can find among foxes, but then you have the fact that a pelt can change color based on climate, seasonal or other factors throughout the years regardless of the species. Then there are of course cross-species foxes like your friend to talk about...Which just make thye whole thing that much more confusing...

Val: Dad, you're rambling...

Cameron: I'm not rambling, I'm merely educating you and the mammal asking the question on just how complex morph families among the vulpes species can be. Granted in the case of Val and myself...well me to a lesser extent, we are the most common color of red morph, orange.

Val: What do you mean, 'too a lesser extent' when you're talking about your own fur? You look pretty orange to me.

Cameron: My pelt is also considered part of the red morph family, but instead of being a simple orange morph like Val's is, it's actually a sort of deeper, more vibrant red referred to as 'fire'. This specific color is rarer, and its origins can be traced back to grussian red foxes, which is where a majority of my side of the family comes from if you go back far enough.

Val: Pfft...lame...I want a cooler pelt color too...

Cameron: Hey, it may have been the standard, but that was your mother's pelt color too, and I happen to think it's very cool.

Val: Pftt...sure...What about you slick?

Nick: Oh, I was waiting for my time to chime in. *Chuckles* I'm afraid I'm in the same boat as you are kid, standard red morph here, and same for my mother, though I do know quite a few vixens who are sporting pelts from the white morph family.

Judy: Quite a few eh? *Glares at Nick.

Nick: Oh hush, you know Skye, and Wade's partner from the Tundratown district. And those relationships are all above board, you know that.

Judy: And these are all still considered red foxes? So where do Arctic foxes come in?

Nick: Well, I'm pretty sure Skye and Finnick are considered 'Sandy Morphs', which are technically still Red Morphs, Although I think Wade's partner is purely a white morph.

Qali: Arctic Foxes are techincally their own species, like Fennecs. But while a majority of arctic foxes sport a 'white morph' like me and my sister Matsa, there are a bunch of arctic foxes sporting what we call a 'Blue Phase Morph', like my younger sister Auniq. Despite the name, a Blue Phase has a pelt that appears almost black or charcoal colored all year round. It's a rare morph, and it's also exclusive to Artic Foxes.

Cameron: Interesting, I don't think I've ever met a real blue morph arctic fox before. Closest I've come to meeting a fox with a pure black morph was Val's great uncle on her mother's side.

Val: Grunkle Silas? The guy who worked the steam train?

Cameron: The the same. Marian used to joke that the family could never tell whether or not he still had soot on his fur from the job. *chuckles* All you could make on in the dark was his eyes, and that garish golden fang he had put in.

Nick: In terms of just how rare your buddy's pelt is, I guess we'd need to see him. But you can more or less use the general morph categories to place him I think. Reds like me, and Val, are the more common Red fox Morph you'll run into on the street. Cameron's color is probably less rare, but I don't think most mammals outside of other foxes will pick up on that.

Cameron: Silas, and the other true Slivers and melanistic type phase foxes are rarer, although not the rarest. They are more common on this side of the world, and you're bound to meet a few of them in the colder districts. then there are of course grey morphs, which are less common here rather than in Roarope.

Nick: The white pelts, however, well I suppose they would be the rarest...although thanks to Zootopia housing a Tundra Climate, There are quite a few families of White and shades of luetcistic non-artic families that have settled down there.

Qali: You may not notice a difference between those foxes and the native arctics ones with a naked eye, especially if you are not a fox yourself, But arctic foxes are smaller than white morphs, and have stunted ears.

Cameron: And that's of course not even counting mutations...such as 'champagne' like my mother Aleta, (which is still technically a red morph) or...of course full on albino foxes, oh and let's not forget the lavender pelt, like Marian's great grandmother. And of course the Marble pelt. Which some of my younger cousins in Roarope sport, and which runs on my side. Marian's Grace, at this point it might just be easier to try to plot us all on some sort of color sheet to better help your friend out. But do tell him not to be discouraged. You are far from alone in terms of having a rather unique pelt. At the end of the day, the range is simply too vast to neatly count-out, so keep your chin up!

Gabriel Grey (Sketch Ask)

This was drawn up as a payment/sketch to thank KarakuriCentral for all he's done in regards to being my editor, for fics and otherwise. Many you may remember some of his previous commissions were very Gideon Grey X Sharla centric, one of the more recent releases being that of the 'Sharla pregnant yoga' flats piece.

On the most recent stream, Kara had asked me what a future potential kit for the pair would look like. And I told him I had actually done that before in an ask, wherein I sketched up a few potential hybrid kits from the pair.

So in order to put a little twist on it, I decided to draw one of them as an adult, and allowed him to pick which kit that got to be.

With that, I present to you, Gabriel Grey, the king of fluff and the goodest of boys.

Gabriel is a soft, rather sweet-natured Shox who takes a great deal of his looks from his father over his mother, right down to his rather stocky frame, and spare tire. Since he was kit he had always looked even more chunky than he actually was due to his rather luxiourus wool fur pelt, and that's always made him super self-conscious. The boy has also always had a natural talent for baking like his Pa, something he had tried to resist when he was younger but over time grew to love. This was largely because he already got more than enough flack at school for being a hybrid kit in general. being talented in what many would see as a rather girly profession would have only made him more of a pariah.

So there's a quick write-up on Gabe. Maybe some other time I'll do one on his lil' sister.

An April Update (Future Stuff)

First and foremost I'd like to thank my backers, both Parishioners and Donators in general for the continued support. It's been a really...rocky late winter in terms of health stuff, so thanks to you guys for continuing to stick it out with me. Especially being just about two months late with this whole 'shout out' and 'general update' post. But for once, I'll say the time hasn't been....well, wasted. Anyway, before we dig on in, here are the shoutouts! Freshly audited and pruned for the month of April.

So lets roll up our sleeves and dig into this with a sizeably large truncheon. But where to start?

I guess it would be best to start out with the status of the ask blog, which is still running. It's not on some sort of temporary Hiatus or anything of that nature. And I have no intention of ending it in the foreseeable future. all though it's no real secret that I've lapsed with quite a few posts on 'AskTheBellhunters" Last month. The bulk of that was related to my health issues being...well all over the place if I'm being honest, and that's both mentally and physically. I'm going to spare you the gritty details, for both our sakes. But it got into the way of...all of my plans which I should have come to expect by now.

Initially, I had planned to take a vacation from the start of March into the first half of April. I had dubbed the idea as more of a sabbatical when I came up with it. The idea was that I'd close commissions, finish up some pending project work, and then take the next month and a half to work on personal projects and study tutorials that would be boring to watch me stumble through with an audience. So it wasn't so much of a 'vacation' as it was...well more like a personal retreat.

When we were coming up to it, I had two key things I wanted to finish up before I declared my official leave. There was the second Page of 'Savage Love', which I posted earlier in the week, and the next chapter of "The Family Vulpes" That was the last two pieces of work I needed to finish before I could delve into the sabbatical proper. Needless to say, that didn't happen as planned.

My health knocked me off of my very flimsy and clumsy legs, making it so I could barely get anything done for multiple weeks. It dragged me ankle-deep into the mud, and I had to claw my way through to get these specific projects wrapped so I could take my sabbatical proper. This overlapped into me skipping asks, and other stuff just so I could focus on Savage and Vulpes. And while this was easier in terms of working on Savage Love's second page, as I had already planned it out, and it was merely a matter of putting pen to paper. The new Family Vuples Chapter is still only half-finished. Writing is, and always has been tricky for me, especially because when it comes to writing stories, I'm always waited for the 'muse' to take me away. The words refuse to come unless it's under just the right conditions. So feeling nauseated, dizzy, and having no appetite for three solid weeks was....well there was no way I was getting into that head space during that time.

So while I was aiming to finish it up in early March, it's now the cusp of April and I'm only halfway through the chapter. That's where I'm at, and with that being the only thing on my plate at the moment, I'm going to use this week to focus on hammering that out. No promises on progress, but ideally...with my health growing increasingly more manageable, I'm hoping to get a few good days in where my fingers don't stumble all over themselves across the keyboard and something coherent comes out of it.

In terms of asks, I'm planning to resume them on Monday-Tuesday, but the jar has been getting pretty low in terms of written only replies I've got stockpiled. I tend to use those to fluff out my post days, because...well, just not every ask is going to make for a good mini-comic or sketch, and my arm needs to rest. To be frank, I've got a lot of cool asks building up that I'd love to draw in comic form. It's just a matter of picking a nice balance of written asks to supplement it. I could...technically go all in and just bang out some drawn asks back to back within the same week...but the whole purpose of the asks were to be...well the last priority on my list in terms of workload. A way to keep folks interested in The bellhunterverse while I work on the fics, or do commissions so I can...eat another day. It was not meant to ever play the sole focus of my workload in favor of projects like improving style and techniques and growing as an artist and a creator, as well as...be the thing I push hardest to get to when dealing with my health setbacks. I've...tried and tried to push through so often..and only now...I've come to terms with the fact that you can't always just...push through physical limitations, and I'm hoping I can...better learn to live around that now.

As I mentioned above, Savage love page 2 is done for now and out. so that's all set. Don't expect a page three till like...May I guess? I've got the scripts plotted for the next three pages ahead of time, so it's just the matter of putting it to page and arranging it all in a visually interesting way. After that, I'll work on condensing the next several pages of the script (With the help of Karakuri Central, thanks bud.) into scenes and dialogue...although I expect the overall dialogue to drop off to some degree once the clothes come off.

When it comes to "The Family Vulpes chapter six'...or five...hold on...yes five, Id love to have that done by the end of the week, but more realistically I'm shooting for end of April overall. When I began the fic, I had plotted out a giant missive planner for it, with all sorts of key plot details and important significant moments that would come up as each of the four major characters journeyed from one side of the narrative to the other, and I went on to sort of break those down into arcs from there. The first four chapters were meant to center around Val, her Dad, and her family, to show you how they got to where they are pre-and post-rehab...without spilling the entirety of the beans on every aspect of them. It explores their family dynamic in contemporary Zoot and how they got there, and to get you familiar with them. That became the focus, and because it's me...and I can't help but always go long in the tooth that stretched into five chapters.

When this chapter is over, we'll essentially be shifting into the second act which will go on to establish both Clover and Kodi, the outsiders in this story, and their respective social dynamics. So I'll need to take a small break to drum up the next five or six chapter briefs about them before I go into writing them proper as I did with Cameron and Val. That shouldn't take too long as I'm merely condensing more of the bits and pieces I've already got set up for them into easier to manage bites. I hope guys will look forward to it...and manage to keep up some degree of investment and interest despite how long it takes me to get chapters out now.  I wish I could turn out a new chapter every week like I used to, but...that's just how it's going to be I guess...and I hope it still reaches folks regardless.

Over the next few months, I'm aiming to get back into animating, 3d stuff, and maybe a little voice acting. I actually used to....do that when I was younger...not to brag. It was fun, although I've always been too shy of my own voice to act along with anyone. So I was thinking this might be a good opportunity to well...sort of start my own audiobook project with Rehab and Law. Maybe a motion comic thing of the old story sometime. but that's still a way at this point. right now I'd like to focus on getting some simple stuff together...maybe a few models are actually suitable for use in something like Misfit or Wasty Cuttlfish. We're a long way off from Misfit V-tubering it around. Maybe some dry tuns in VR chat, that sort of thing.

So...I think I've said...oh wait...yeah! So Before I sign off, I also wanted to use this time on my sabbatical to work on what my patreon offers, and the prices overall. I'm going to need to restructure a lot of things soon. The chat, the perks...and I want to reach out to other artists that...well know what they are doing in terms of merch and prints and see what I can learn from them. It's easier said than done at this point, as I've always been terrible at networking....and I don't want to get ahead of myself here. But I'm formulating some big plans for this patreon and well...I hope those of you who've stuck with this long throughout my modest career in art will be excited to see what's coming.

Thanks for everything, and sorry for the delays, I love you all...

Savage Love (Page 2)

What a surprise, once again slightly behind schedule with my estimates. I swear I should just stop making them all together...but I suppose if I didn't create that little bit of external pressure to meet an established deadline, that would just make things worse not better.

Still regardless, page two of "Savage Love" Is hot off the presses and ready to post. Ideally, I wanted to have this ready to roll last week but...my health has been rough and honestly, I still have yet to get it...well stable enough to know I'm gonna be able to get some real consistent work over the next few days.

I don't want to bore you with specifics, as by this point I'm sure many of your regular readers are getting tired of reading this sort of thing, but I'm starting new medication now that....well I'm hoping will give me some degree of control over my 'condition'. In the meantime, the doctor told me I have to basically go out of my way to take it easy and rest, and actually give myself time to stabilize rather than jump right into work the moment I get an inkling that I'm starting to feel better.

Enough about that, let's actually get on to a little write-up on page here. Picking up from...well it'd be wrong to call the first page a 'cliffhanger' I guess, but it ended quite abruptly. This time around we actually delve a bit into the actual scene as Dawn and Vernon share a brief back and forth in Vernon's living room, illuminated by little more than the backlight Vernon's HD TV. For those of you who read the REHAB fic, you'll know exactly what Vernon said at the hospital while he thought Dawn was in a coma and couldn't hear him. For the rest of you, you'll just have to wait until page three drops sometime in late May to earlier June (fingers crossed) for your answer.

In the meantime, the full-res of this page will be going up on my patreon shortly after I post here, so if having access to that sort of thing interests you, or if you just want to support their artist behind 'Ask THe Bellhunters' and their work, feel free to check my patreon out and consider becoming a member. Just pledging a dollar will get you access full res work and works in progress a full month ahead of the public releases.

Ask Barry: What species is Barry? EX: Austailian and Pred Pride Parties

WT: To answer your supplementary question, the Austailian Marsupial Party is essentially what it says it is. A political party largely for marsupial mammals and Austailian immigrants and descendants of those immigrants. The party was founded shortly after the Great Marsupial Migration, or Great Austailian Migration in the 1920's, in response to the rapidly rising population of Austailian marsupials in Zootopia during that period, and have persisted since then. Basically the party largely concerns itself with political issues regarding marsupials and Austailian immigration, as well as helping fund civil projects and medical research pertaining to bettering the lives of Marsupial mammals in Zootopia.

As for the predator pride party, it's another 'does what it says on the tin' style party. It's a political party that largely focuses on predator interests and predator rights. Unlike the Austailian Party, it got it's start significant'y earlier in Zootopia's history, during the late 1800s, and it's primary focuse then was essential advocating for civil rights for the lesser predator mammals of the city in general. By lesser I mean the predators that didn't hold distinct high prominence positions like the Lionhearts. Basically your every day predators that saw themselves largely shunned by prey communities. The purpose of the party first and foremost was to act as a moral boost for said disenfranchised preds, telling them it was okay to take pride in your diet, sort of like a form of therapy as statistics would later show that suicides among predator mammals dropped dramatically after the party was formed.

These days, the party is still advocating for predators on a political level, (and mam' did they have their work cut out for them during the night howler scare), but they also fund civic projects and predator mental health programs.

Ask Vernon; Who's Moira?

Ask Dawn and Vern: Lionheart Family, Power and Leodore's Living Relatives

Dawn: Well, when it comes to the Lionheart Family, they've stayed very wealthy due to having a paw in... basically every industry in Zootopia at one time or another. From mining to alternative energy, to biological research and consumer goods. Needless to say, when there wasn't a Lionheart in political office, there were several working for fortune five hundred companies that work exclusively for Zootopia or North Mammalia.

Vernon: I imagine the fact that there is still a royal Lionheart family in Great Kitten also helps with clout.

Dawn: Well, the Bellwethers also have direct royal lineage in the living members of the Blackwool family. But, I think with Richard the Lionheart helping well...found Zootopia proper, and relatives of the King and subsequent kings essentially running Zootopia until its political system was fleshed out properly, I mean...it certainly holds a greater degree of clout than just...the sheep that helped run the Meadowlands. The Bellwether name may have opened a door from time to time, but the Lionheart mantle blew any door off its hinges. It also didn't help that most of my family members who held a public position didn't...really leave a favorable legacy behind, whereas a Lionheart almost always led a good, if not at minimum an uneventful term in office. Leodore would be...the first to really mess that streak up.

Vernon: Spectacularly I might add.

Dawn: In his defense, there was a Bellwether involved...so the curse continues to hold strong. *Giggles*

Vernon: He does have livin' relatives though right?

Dawn: Yes, aside from his distant relatives in Kingland, he has a mother, father, and sister. Ford Lionheart, Miriam Lionheart, and Catalina Lionheart. Leodore's father is retired now, but he was the CEO of the company that helped design the Climate Control systems for the Rainforest, Sahara and Tundratown Districts respectively. Miriam married in, but also came from a wealthy pride, in that her family still has a paw in the elevator and escalator industry. And Catalina, at least last I heard, was a high-powered government Lawyer in Woolshington D.C. From what I've heard, Ford and Miriam have more or less disowned Leodore for what happened with the Night Howler Scandal, and I'm not sure exactly if Catalina has also given him the cold shoulder as well, but she more than likely has.

Vernon: Yeesh, that sounds purty rough...I mean...I know he messed up big...but disownin' him seems a little much.

Dawn: Well...I think his parents are....well they are the type to be very concerned with their social standing and how the public views the family at large. So much so that they'd value it more than having a relationship with their son.  But I imagine it doesn't help that Leodore hasn't really...learned anything...and he certainly hasn't grown more humble from the experience...

Ask Special; Dawn and Vern Reverse Species Costumes!

WT: Yeah, this really doesn't have anything to do with an ask, but I drew this for fun on a stream and thought it would make some good blog content. Dawn seems to be having a great time, but Vern, for fairly obvious reasons, isn't too pleased with the arrangement. If Yuri hadn't been present, he would have been more than fine with it.

I've got more drawn ask content this week, it's just all short stuff though. Expect it soon.
