Ask the BellHunters

Hello, I'm Dawn Hunter-Bellwether...er, formerly Dawn Bellwether if you didn't recognize the added surname. And before you ask, yes 'that' Dawn Bellwether. Ex-Assistant Mayor, Ex-Mayor, Ex-Criminal Mastermind (Reformed thank you very much), City Savior, Controversial Author, and Predator/Prey relationship advocate. I'm also, as you probably guess by the hyphenated last name, married, and happily so to my mate Vernon Hunter, a gray wolf. I'm also a mother to three wonderful pups, something I never thought I'd ever have the chance to be! But, lamb sakes, I've gushed enough about myself here without explaining exactly what this blog is for. You see, after the release of my book “Predator Seeking Prey”, our little family started to get a lot of public attention again, and with it came a lot of question from curious mammals and other pred/prey couples from all over Animalia. My best friend and mate Vernon thought it would be a good idea to deal with these questions directly by opening a sort of blog/forum and taking those questions about our lives directly. Since then, I'd like to say our little blog has been quite successful, with even members of our family and friend circle pitching in and taking a few questions as well. So with all that said., please feel free to Ask Away!

Oh, and also, feel free to check our old location for previous asks until we can get a better archive system in place!

(Blog Author Note: This blog is based on the fanfiction “The Rehabilitation of Dawn Bellwether” as well as it's pseudo-sequel “A Lamb Among Wolves”. If you haven't read them, it'll probably help you better understand what's going on here if you do. I'll link both stories below. Oh Also, I'm open to questions as well. Simply direct “Author” emails to “WastedTime” when composing them. And before I forget, I have a Patreon! Five dollars gets you access to in progress fics, Ask priority, and art previews of both SFW and NSFW art. Of course, even a dollar would help. Seriously, it's how I keep projects like this alive.

Ask the Ruminerds; Sub-Pawtica

Vernon: I'm purty sure Gus had been playin' that one. The one with the underwater stuff...right?

Gus: Underwater exploration and crafting survival game. And yes, I do play it.

Vernon: So...er...y'all just explore the sea in it?

Gus: I mean...yeah. It's not a sea on Animalia though. It's like, the game is set in the future, and you crash land on an ocean type planet, and are the sole survivor of the wreck. So you basically have to survive up until you can get rescued or escape the place.

Vernon: Aw, that sounds kinda neat.

Gus: It's really cool, and it's got a great sort of ambiance to it, especially when you play it at night, in low lighting. It's amplifies the game's naturally unnerving atmosphere. It really gives you that feeling of total isolation, and the impending dread that comes from not knowing would could be swimming just beneath you. *Shudders* I should mention the sea terrifies me in general, so it only amplifies the feel of playing the game for me.

Vernon: Oh yeah, I almost fergot you're afraid of the ocean...

Gus: I'm downright petrified. I mean, I don't want to sound like Ulric, but who knows what nightmarish things lurk in the deepest depths of the ocean that we have yet to discover! Sweet Sawgrass, we've barely explored any of the ocean as it is! It leaves so much open to the active imagination!

Vernon: A recipie fer disaster for us BnB types, since we've been honin' or imagination skills since we was pups.

Gus: Exactly. As for the Below Zero expansion, I'm looking forward to it. Especially that land speeder. That's going to be fun...I hope...

Vernon: Hope?

Gus: The trailer was all CG footage, and I know better than to pin my hopes entirely on trailer footage.

Ask Nick and Judy; Mr. Big's Successor

Nick: The short answer is... No one? But the longer answer is...well, it's really complicated. Mr. Big stepped down mostly because the birth of his grandchildren caused him to have a sort of...crisis of morals, as well as partially due to the influence of one somewhat well known police bunny.

Judy: I'm glad he reformed. It...doesn't exactly excuse his previous crimes, but...

Nick: Those cases are too old to prosecute at this point. To be honest, much of Mr. Big's really...extreme criminal activities started to die down when Fru-Fru got older. Becoming a parent made him soft, something which happened to Koslov as well...

Judy: I wish that happened with every crime boss...

Nick: Anyway, Big was basically the sole crime boss in Tundra town. Once he stepped down it led to an almost immediate power vacuum. The only problem is, most of the guys who tried to step up to the plate to fill the gap didn't have what it took to stay there. They'd either be terrible at covering their tracks, and find themselves arrested with iron-clad evidence, or they'd meet a grisly end by the paws of one of the other district's known criminal gangs which had all been fighting to carve out portions of Mr. Big's Empire for themselves since he had stepped down. Granted none of them have been able to get a proper foothold on the area probably due to a combination of ZPD efforts, and that the other districts gang's are very species specific, and...aren't suited for sticking their necks out in tundra town for long periods of time.

Judy: So for the most part, Tundratown has remained largely free of any real organized crime efforts. And we here at the ZPD intend to keep it that way!

Nick: Well I mean... Tundratown isn't exactly our primary beat...But hey, at the very least we'll be on top of the Antelonellie Gang in Savannah Square...

Judy: Well...gotta start somewhere, right?

Nick: *Chuckles* Of course Carrots...

Ask the Ruminerds; Jojo's Bizarre Foods

Broomie: Not to sound like I'm trying to brag or anything, but...I mean....my family used to live in Italamb. Like, my grandparents did. So my family has always been big on the Italamb cuisine.

Vernon: I remember Broom's parent's place always smelled like a pizzeria. *Chuckles*

Broomie: Needless to say, Tomato and Mozerella salad was a staple recipe in my house, and it's always been one of my favorites. Squid ink pasta? Eh, less so...

Gus: Yeah, that on seems kinda iffy to me...the idea of eating something soaked in 'ink' isn't all that appealing.

Broomie: My granddad loved the stuff. I think he was the only one in the family that did, that's why he made it.

Joel: I like Squid Ink Pasta. Granted I'd be lying if I said I had tried it before watching Jo-Jo. There's this great little Itailian Restuarant in Downtown Zootopia called Ratatioulle's that makes classic Shrewcilian style cuisine for an average sized mammals hunger.

Broomie: An 'Itailian' place? Bleh...

Joel: What?

Broomie: Itailian cuisine is not comparable to Italamb cuisine. Everyone knows their...hygiene habit when it comes to their kitchens is sub-par.

Joel: Ooh, Sounds like someone's being speciest. *Chuckles* What, you're saying just because rats made it, it's unhygienic?

Broomie: Sorry, it's just...y'know. Old blood feuds die hard. We Italamb's are a very proud people, and there's no way Italamb's cast off's could do better than true Italamb's when it comes to food.

Gus: Yeesh, a century since the split at the Ratican line, and a continent away for good measure and there's still no room for discussion eh?

Broomie: C'mon, you guys have all eaten at my parent's place! You know it's better food!

Joel: Hmm...maybe that's why you didn't like Squid Ink Pasta...*Chuckles* Maybe if you tasted some made by the true masters of the craft, you'd-

Broomie: There is not a Plague-Rat alive who could out-cook Grandma Broomie! Hooves down!

Vernon: Yeesh....remind me never to introduce y'all to my co-worker...

Ask World Building; Alpine Glade

WT: Ah yes, Alpine Glade is the District that neighbors the North And South Meadowlands on the eastern side, largely separated by a natural border made up of the Alpine Ridge Mountain Range. Unlike the Meadolwands, famous for it's rolling hills and flat grasslands made for farming, Alpine Glade is a rather rocky and mountainous region broken up by a myriad of valley's and fjords. It was the district that was originally settled and governed by the Nor-wulves who accompanied the expedition to the New World, and remains largely populated by wolves to this day. Granted, that doesn't mean it's a strictly 'wolf' district, there are plenty of other mountain mammals to be found who call Alpine Glade home, but much like the Meadowlands is largely made up of sheep, cervid and other caprid folks, so to is Alpine Glade largely made up of wolves.

When it came to Vernon's family, they found their ancestral home absorbed by a redrawing of the North Meadowlands border a century or so prior, in an area where one of Alpine Glade's valley's tapers into the North Meadowlands region.

So yeah, mountains, fjords, pine trees of all kinds. When picturing the Alpine Glade District, I like to try to envision something between the Colorado Rockies and the Fjords of Norway, perfect settling grounds for the Norwulves.

Ask Joel: Japanda Problems

Joel: Jeeze, all these strangers so concerned about my Japanda trip...I swear. I can't decide wether I'm flattered or creeped out to be honest.

Megumi: I vote for creeped out. I'd be creeped out if it were me.

Joel: Well they aren't asking for nude pictures or used underwear.

Megumi: Yet...

Joel: Anyway, no I didn't upset any Yakowza types, and I...er...well...as for making a scene.

Megumi: The 'Gunbun' statue incident did make nation-wide news, granted it's not the first time it's happened.

Joel: I had to pay a pretty hefty fine to avoid a bit of jail time. Still...I'm kind of surprised the fee was so low.

Megumi: Again, you weren't the first to pull a stunt like that. There were a number of Otaku before you've who've either tried to scale it because they were fans, as well as a number of...goats, like sheep and goat? Ca-Capri?

Joel: Caprids?

Megumi: Yeah, they got that 'urge to climb' in their blood, well...some of them do. Some of 'em were just compelled to climb it because it was there.

Joel: Well, I was climbing cause I wanted a sweet selfie with an important piece of animalme history.

Megumi: *Chuckles* You sure about that? If I recall, you didn't know that exact gunbun's name and number...

Joel: O-okay...so maybe part of it was...a bit of an urge to scale a weird object... kinda deal...

Megumi: Part of?

Joel: Eighty percent Gunbun, twenty percent free climb.

Ask Shade AU: New Foster Parents

Zach: Oh, I love it! I love bein' a Pa!

Vanna: It's...been an adjustment...admittedly...Not that I don't like being a parent...it was, I mean it was sort of sudden.

Zach: Aww...Kitten, yer makin' it sound like chores here...

Vanna: *Flustered* O-Oh no that's not- I mean...I'm not trying to make it sound like I'm not...I mean I really care about Marcus, and I really like being a mother to him...I'm just...I'm more nervous than excited most of the time...

Zach: Aww babe. *Hugs Vanna* This about the whole 'ain't sure you'll be a good parent' thing?

Vanna: *Leans into the hug* *Nods softly* I just, I want to be a good mother...but I know I'm...big and scary looking. And Marcus is already skittish enough. What if I hug to hard and hurt him? What if he never feels comfortable around me because I look so...imposing.

Zach: Imposin'? *Chuckles* Y'all know that boy already took a shine to ya just like I did after we met. Heck, he's already called ya Ma at least once, and I've made no secret of just how jealous that make me of you.

Vanna: *Laughs* You know, you could just ask Marcus to call you Pa.

Zach: I can't do that! *Chuckles* I gotta earn that, just like y'all did!

Vanna: *Shakes her head* If you insist Goofball...

Zach: As fer how skittish the boy is, he has been getting' better, and he's been openin' up a lot more. We just gotta give it time right?

Vanna:Quoting me now?

Zach: It was good advice when y'all said it the first time, and I don't think that's changed. He came from a rough situation after all, it makes sense he'd have a harder time of adaptin' to a normal family life than yer average foster pup.

Vanna: *Chuckles* 'Normal' family life...As normal as a Wolf tithed to a Tigress can be I suppose...

Zach: *shrugs* Eh, normal enough. If anythin' it makes the boy fit in twice as much...

Vanna: *Smiles* I guess...that's true.

Zach: I do wish I could get it to stick in the boys head that he ain't an indentured servant though. *Sighs* Every time I think he's finally gonna settle down and relax a bit, I turn around to find him tryin' to re-tile our roof because of some off-pawed comment I made, er' diggin' a hole fer a pool just cause I floated the idea of getting' one installed.

Vanna: Speaking of...where is Marcus?

Zach: Practicin' his violin...fer fun o' course. I made that very clear he should only be doin' it iffin' he wants.

Vanna: I...don't hear his violin...

Zach:....

Vanna: Did you say anything else while you were in there...

Zach: I don't think...Oh, well I was on the phone with that fella about getting' out ducts cleaned out an...Oh...don't tell me...

*Thump is heard from the ceiling above the pair of mammals, drawing their attention upward.*

Zach: Teeth to tails! Marcus boy!?! Y'all in there?

Marcus: Mr. H-hunter? Is that you?

Zach: What are y'all doin' in there!?

Marcus: Well, you s-said someone needed to clean the ducts...s-so I thought...

Vanna: *Sighs* I'll go make sure the ladder is still up...

Ask Shade AU; Lily the Hall Monitor!

Dawn: Well...it doesn't really bother me if it's something she's actually interested in. If she wanted to be a Hall Monitor I'd definitely encourage her. We both would. And if she took an interest in law enforcement as an adult well...I know we'd both be worried for her safety...but if that's what she really wanted, I don't think it'd be right to stand in her way.

Vernon: *Mumbles quietly*

Dawn: Aww...Puppy Love...

Vernon: Wh-what? I'm fine...

Dawn: No you aren't. Your ears and tail are sagging and you've got that little furrow in your brow, I can see it.

Vernon: Darn my ears and tail! *Whines*

Dawn: Are you afraid Dorian is going to pounce on the opportunity to start training Lily for police work if he catches wind?

Vernon: *Nods meekly* And my brothers...to a lesser extent.

Dawn: Puppy, we talked about this.

Vernon: I know...

Dawn: I know your worried about your father trying to impose his interests on Lily like he did you, but we don't want to go so overboard trying to protect Lily from being roped into something against her will that we stifle her desire to actually pursue things she might want to pursue.

Vernon: I know! It's...*Sigh* I just...bein' a cop is dangerous! And I mean...just the thought of her policin'...even all grown up...It's just hurtin' my chest. Like I can feel all my muscles tensin' up over the idea.

Dawn: You aren't alone Puppy Love. I feel the same way. But what are we going to do? Keep Lily prisoner?

Vernon: O'course not!

Dawn: Then when the time comes...we need to let her spread her wings. We have to be supportive.

Vernon: *Whines* Now I know what Ma felt like when she was goin' through this.

Dawn: And she had six sons to worry about, and her mate for that matter!

Vernon: Tell me about it...Er' wait, scratch that. Don't mention this to Ma. Knowin' her she'd talk my ear off about all that worryin' she did...and purty much say the exact thang you said about pushin' through and supportin' her pups...

Dawn: Mhh...The opportunity to chime in with an 'I told you so' is rather tempting, I have to admit...

Vernon: Honey Lamb...

Dawn: Okay, okay! I won't say a word...*Giggles*

Shade AU ask; Glitter Ban

WT: This is a post related to Elite Shade’s BellHunterverse AU “Found”. Check it out on Fanfiction.net and Archive of our own.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13128859/1/Found

Vernon: Glitter...ban? I have no idea what yer talkin' about...

Dawn: Oh yes, we...um...I mean surely you've heard of the shortage?

Vernon: Right, the er...all the worlds...glitter mines? Have dried up. So...until they find another one, findin' glitter is gonna be scarce.

Dawn: *Flashes Vernon a half lidded gaze* *Whispers* Glitter mines? Really?

Vernon: *Vernon slips a paw by his muzzle, leaning closer to Dawn in glancing over his shoulder.* The lil' Miss is in the room, it was the best thing I could come up with...

Dawn: *Shakes head* Really?

Vernon: I'm not a writer Honey Lamb!

Dawn: *Clears throat* Yes, Glitter...mines. And it could take some time before they find another. Maybe even years. They may even have to go to space to find more...

Vernon: *Whispers* Space?

Dawn: Space Mining. *Quietly* That one should get us through her until she's an adult.

Vernon: *Nods*

Lily: Aww...but Princess toast isn't Princess toast without glitter.

Dawn: *Hugs Lily* Don't worry sweetie, the...sprinkles are more than enough, really.

Ask 1364; Animalia Nations?

WT: Phew, countries? Not continents? Man, I...I mean I haven't named a lot of places to be honest. I basically covered the chief continents, and since then the nations of Animalia as a whole have...admittedly been a “make 'em up as you go” situation. So, with that said I'll list what I did come up with so far, and explain the ones that replace parent countries.

First, there's the seven continents, although I've been toying with including an eight at some point, perhaps a take on Zelandia, the “Continent that could have been.”

As it stands we have,

North Mammalia = North America

South Mammalia = South America

Roarope = Europe

Afrikat = Africa

Ursa = Asia

Austalia = Austrailia

Antbarktica = Antarctica

Now, for countries I've taken the time to name as they've come along, we've got...

North Mammalian Union = The USA, Canada and Mexico stand in, actually made up of several smaller super states that would be made up of the states Americans know, plus Canada and Mexico. Each of the countries are still technically separate entities, but work under European Union Rules. Zootopia lies in the heart of the North Mammalian Union, despite being it's own 'city-state'.

Mexicat = Mexico: I haven't toyed with that much in terms of deciding on what aspects may be different in a Zootopian verion in terms of structure.

Canidea = Canada: Canidea is largely made up of native mammal run nations, much like some of the states in Amerikat? America as we know it?

Guatallama = Guatemala: I had Gazelle briefly bring this up in Rehab as her home nation, and talk about how bad pred/prey relations were there. Admittedly my research was scant as with some nations, I wanted to use the vague cultural elements from them, but stay away from hard reflections of those societies as they are now. I made it sound like a pretty rough place in Zootopia because I wanted it to be enough of a constraint to push Gazelle to leave.

The New Pridelands/Great Kitten/Kingland =England: This is complicated. In Zootopia, Lions and felines were the driving force in much of the early empires. This culminated in an empire known as “The Pridelands Empire” Stretching out of South Afrikat and into parts of Roarope. In this instance, it's sort of the “Roman” displacer. It famously lasted for 1000 years before it partially collapsed, leaving behind the old empires remnants in “South Afrikat”, and the New Empire in Kingland, which would spearhead the founding of Zootopia.

South Afrikat = South Africa: An amalgam of several south African nations that exists as a contemporary monarchy. It is a super-power that stands on equal footing with the NMU, Kingland, Grrussia, and Panda.

Panda = China: I'm not happy with that one, it needs work.

Grussia = Russia

Japanda = Japan: While Japan isn't the natural habitat for Pandas, I figured that either at some point Panda occupied Japanda and named it as such, or the fact that the Red Panda's were driven out of Panda, and found refuge in Japanda earned it the name.

Irelamb = Ireland: I haven't explored Irelamb as deeply as “Schottram”, Dawn's acestral home. But it would be similarly populated largely with livestock mammals, wolves and foxes.

Schottram = Scottland: I wrote a whole mess about Dawn's ancestral home, and several of it's rulers. Very herbivore-centric cultural roots, despite the injection of Norwulffish citizens as the years went on. Lot's of pagan, or 'preygan' elements there.

Greater and Lesser Norwulff: These nations basically replace Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and was largely dominated by wolves. The wolf culture has heavy nordic equivalent and viking roots to them, although with less 'raping and pillaging' going on as they reached a mass 'spiritual enlightenment' several centuries ago.

East and West Hyenya – Kenya: I nearly forgot this one, Hyenya is a war-torn nation in South Afrikat, at least West Hyenya is. The reason it's split between east and west is because it was once part of “The Pridelands Empire”. With the Pridelands empire in charge, while hyena's weren't treated particularly well, many felt living under the law of the Pridelands was considerably less worse than the previously violent matriarchal system that saw male hyenas treated as sub-mammals by their own kind. After the Pridelands faltered, and Hyenya earned its freedom in tor process, a split developed between the populace, with one side wanting a return to their matriarchal roots, while the other faction wished to build off the laws left in place by the Pridelands. The border between the nations is a hot zone, prone to skirmishes usually revolving around west hyenian refugees looking for asylum in East Hyenya.

Alright, so that's enough of that for now...this is already too long and it's late. I hope that...sort of answered your ask.

Ask from the Past?; Tasmanian Tigers

Hilariously, I've actually answered this sort of ask before, but I didn't really expound on it. Anyway, like Mammoths and Saber Tooth tigers, Tasmanian Tigers do still live in “Austalia”, I had even made one the actual Prime Minister of the country in...what I guess I'd say is the current timeline of the story? The present? I thought I had Dawn detail that the species was common, at least in Austalia, and not extinct or even endangered. Unlike The Saber-Tooth Tiger and Mammoth which, while they still exist, there are few and their morphology has begun to change due to how “Evolution” works in Zootopia in terms of sentient mammals.

However, the text I scavenged below from the intial blog entry doesn't mention any of that, so...there's an expanded take from my perspective. Included below is the text from the original blog post. Thanks for the ask!

-WT

“Thanks to user Guillermo for pointing out that Hyenas are apparently felines, something I missed during my research because I was so sure they were just Canids. I’ll have to handle this in LAW as well when it comes to Ada…” -Old Ask Post
